Our 30+ year history
The story with 3 guys, a scanner, an Apple Mac and a dream...
CDR Repro was formed in 1995 by Derrick Conway, Peter Duckitt and Terry Roderick, all qualified drum scanner operators, as a specialised hi-resolution scanning studio with a Scitex Smart CCD scanner, in Glenwood, Durban.
A year later we invested in an imagesetter to produce film positives for the advertising, litho and silk screen print industries, thus becoming what was known as a ‘repro house’.
1997 saw CDR Repro move to Florida Road, with Morningside being home to many of Durban’s top advertising agencies and graphic designers. We purchased our first A3 digital printer, a Xerox 5799 with Splash colour RIP.
In 1999 CDR moved to a house in Cowey Road where we installed a larger Screen Katana B2 film imagesetter with on-line processor, and CDR Repro purchased Positone, which included a large format Encad printer and a Cromalin colour contract proof system,
Early 2001 saw CDR Repro trading from larger premises in Linze Road to make space for it’s expanding staff. 2002 and 2003 brought upgrades to our Xerox with DC12 and Fiery RIP and a new Screen Cezanne scanner.
2004 saw a move to much larger premises in Umgeni Road and in 2005 the members set up a sister company Accucolour with a Heidelberg SM72 5 colour litho press installed downstairs, and a year later a new Kodak 1200i large format ink jet upstairs at CDR.
CDR Repro’s next major investment was in 2008 when a Screen TruePress 344 digitally-imaged litho press was installed and in 2010, a first-generation HP Latex large format printer for outdoor signage, and over the next ten years another 3 more Xerox upgrades and a new HP Latex 370 printer and Summa cutter.
In 2013 CDR moved to new premises in Walkers Lane. The next 9 years CDR remain settled but later 2020 in the devastating the effects of the Covid-19 lock down necessitated a downscale so we moved back to Linze Road, this time into ground floor premises.
Early 2024 we upgraded our Xerox to V280 and and the HP Latex printer to the latest 630W model and a wider Summa cutter, and in 2025 CDR Repro moved to it’s current premises in Northgate Park complex in Red Hill, Durban North.
